Pharmacy and Faculty of Legal Studies in collaboration with Women Grievance
Cell, Desh Bhagat University, Mandi Gobindgarh organized an expert talk on the
topic “Surrogacy: Social and Legal Aspects” through online mode.
Dr.
Rajinder Kaur Randhawa, Associate Professor, School of Law, Delhi Metropolitan
Education affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi,
was the eminent speaker of the day. The objective of the lecture was to describe the
identity of the newborn and make all the audience understand the social
and legal understandings of parenthood, which are redefined in the changing
situation, and about the remark of the apex court on the necessity of a law
regulating surrogacy that made mostly considering the ambiguities on the identity
of the newborn.
The speaker was welcomed
digitally by Dr. Puja Gulati, Principal, School of Pharmacy, and Prof. B. D.
Dhiman, Principal, S. Lal Singh Memorial College of Pharmacy, Desh Bhagat
University. The speaker explained that infertility threatens the social
acceptability of women and legitimizes the role of the wife in ensuring marital
stability, security, bonding to family, and the role of women in the family, community, and other social spaces. Motherhood is portrayed as central to the social
construction of womanhood. Thus, childlessness becomes a social problem or a
social crisis in patriarchal societies. This has an impact on the growing
demand for medical treatment for infertility. She told about the emergence
of the market as a key role player in the field of new reproductive technologies
makes the debate further intricate. She told about the recent academic works
which clearly suggest the inter-linkage of patriarchy and market forces.
All
the faculty members and students of the Faculty of Pharmacy Faculty of Legal
Studies learned a lot from this excellent talk. At the end of the event, Dr. Inderpreet
Kaur, HOD, Faculty of Legal Studies delivered the vote of thanks to the eminent
speaker.
